Workshop Rationale

Several recent reports and news accounts indicate that stress and stress related disorders has reached epidemic proportions among the general population. Scientific research continues to confirm the harmful effects of stress on our relationships, parenting, career, overall functioning and general health.

Throughout human existence men and women have been exposed to stressors and the need to establish effective coping mechanisms to deal with stress.

The nature of stress for primitive human beings was primarily physical threat, which automatically caused a number of biological and physical reactions designed to protect the individual by preparing the body to fight or take flight.

Although there still exist some threat of physical harm, stress in today's society is fueled primarily by psychosocial interactions which creates the same alarm reactions as that experienced by our prehistoric ancestors.

The nature of our present day stressors are more emotional than physical, but our bodily responses have not changed. Since we cannot fight or take flight in most stressful situations, we can experience severe emotional and physical damage, which can include: constant irritability, problems in concentration, loss of motivation, weight loss or gain, substance abuse, and in more severe cases, depression, hypertension, heart attack, peptic ulcer, and other damage or physical disease.
